OLED Technology or Organic Light Emitting Diode is a type of LED (Light Emitting Diode) in which the material used as the semiconductor is carbon-based. This organic material is usually placed between two electrodes with one of the electrodes being transparent. When electric current is applied to this material, it starts emitting light. The OLED technology is mainly used for the manufacture of digital displays in various devices including computer monitors, television screens, mobile phones, PDAs and even handheld gaming consoles as well. Solid-state lighting applications make use of white OLED devices, the development of which is a very important research area at the present moment in time.
Working Principle of OLEDs
OLEDs are made up of a simple basic structure. They have two electrodes; the cathode, which inject electrons and an anode, which removes electrons with an emissive and conductive layer in between the two. The anode is typically kept transparent. When voltage is applied across the two electrodes, electric current passes from the cathode towards the anode with the electrons getting injected at the cathode and being removed from the anode. The removal of electrons at the anode results in the formation of holes. Since the electrons are negatively charged and the holes are positively charged, an electrostatic force brings them closer to each other in the emissive layer resulting in the formation of an exciton. As the excited state of the exciton lowers down, energy is released from the electron in the form of a radiation whose frequency lies in the visible range.

Advantages of OLEDs over LCDs
OLED technology is considered to have a number of advantages over the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) technology. First of all the OLEDs are cheaper to produce than the LCDs now that mass production methods are being used for their manufacture. Secondly, the OLEDs are light in weight as they can be fabricated on flexible plastic substrates. Moreover, they are shatter resistant as well unlike the LCDs whose glass displays are vulnerable to shattering. Thirdly, OLEDs have a far greater contrast ratio and thus offer wider viewing angles than the LCDs. In addition to this, OLEDs have a higher response time and are more power efficient than LCDs.
